Governor's Dodge State Park

Governor's Dodge State Park
Wisconsin
We have camped several times throughout the years at Governor's Dodge State Park. It is one of the larger, well-known parks in the state that is popular for camping. It is located 3 miles north of Dodgeville Wisconsin. It has 5,000 acres of steep hills, bluffs, and deep valleys. Governor's Dodge has two lakes and a waterfall. This state park is large and you will have to drive your car to get around. There are two main camping areas, Cox Hollow and Twin Valley. Both areas have a large amount of standard and tent campsites that are non-electric and electric. There is also a group tent site area called Hickory Ridge and a horse camp area. Lastly there are some backpack sites that you must hike into, which are a 1/2 mile from the parking lot. Governor's Dodge State Park has a very nice beach at it. It is a large beach with great soft sand. Around the beach is a big lawn area with picnic tables, a pavillion, and an indoor concession area that sells ice cream and treats. Near the beach is also a designated dog beach. Other amenities at Governor's Dodge are bike trails, non-motorized boat rentals, boating, canoe rentals, comfort station, disabled access, drinking water, dump station, fire rings, firewood, fishing, flush restrooms, handicapped access, hiking trails, nature area, parking, picnic areas, picnic tables, pit toliets, playground, shelter, showers, swimming, and water fill-up station. Governor's Dodge has a lot of great hiking at it. Before we had kids, my husband and I used to do a lot more hiking and would even take our dog with us. Now that we have small kids, we do not hike very much. When we do, we go short distances. At Governor's Dodge there is a very short hike to the Stevens Falls waterfall. It is an easy hike for little legs. If you are a hunter, deer hunting is allowed within the park during the designated deer season in November. When entering any of the state parks in Wisconsin, you must purchase a vehicle admission sticker. You can purchase it by the day or you can get an annual sticker for the entire year. The admission sticker is good for any of the state parks in Wisconsin. Trail passes must also be purchased if you are over 16 years old and are going to be biking, in-line skating, horseback riding, or cross country skiing on any of the designated trails. Firewood is not allowed to be brought into any Wisconsin state park from out of state or from over 50 miles away. I suggest waiting to buy firewood once you get there. You can buy firewood within the park or outside the park. Nearby, in the town of Dodgeville, there are some places for shopping and dining. There is a Piggly Wiggly grocery store, a Super Wal-Mart, gas stations, and Farm & Fleet. There is also some fast food places like Pizza Hut, Culvers, and a Country Kitchen. For entertainment there is a miniature golf course and the Cave Of The Mounds isn't too far away, if you want to tour some underground caves. If you want to visit Governor's Dodge, but aren't too keen on camping, there is the House On The Rock Inn. This is a very nice hotel that has an outdoor pool and an indoor pool area with a small kid's waterpark. I highly recommend Governor's Dodge State Park in Wisconsin for camping or just for a fun visit.
