Turkey Run State Park
Indiana
Turkey Run State Park in Indiana was a wonderful place that we enjoyed. We were lucky enough to visit there twice. The first time, My husband and I and our 1 year old daughter spent a weekend there and stayed in the Turkey Run Inn. The following summer we camped and my daughter was 2 years old and I was largely pregnant with my son. Turkey Run State Park has a lot to offer. The campground has 213 sites that are electrical and also has modern restrooms and showers. The Turkey Run Inn has 61 rooms, a conference center, and a full service restuarant called The Narrows. There is also a selection of cabins to choose from. There are 11 hiking trails and tons of beutiful scenery. Sugar Creek runs through the park and it is Indiana's most popular canoe stream. Turkey Run does not offer its own canoe services, but several local canoe liveries operate along the creek. Another awesome feature of the park is that there is an olympic size swimming pool. It is a $2.00 fee per person for the day. At the pool there is a bathhouse, wading pool, playground equipment, and concession stand. There are life jackets available there for little kids. Just a note, you are not allowed to have your small child wear a swimsuit with built in floaties. I had to put a different suit on my daughter and use one of their own lifejacks. The swimming pool is opened from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Another cool thing at Turkey Run State Park is the park's Nature Center. When you enter the Nature Center's building you will see education displays about the park, nature, and the animals. There are some live animals to view, such as snakes and frogs. There is also some hands on stuff for the kids. Towards the back of the building is a "nature window." This large window looks outside into a area of the woods where people are not permitted. The park rangers set out and hide food throughout the area. It attracts all sorts of wildlife. So basically, you can sit and watch out this window and see all different kinds of animals coming and going. It is like watching a live movie. When we were there we saw a large ground hog eating out of a log, hummingbirds feeding right up in front of the window, baby raccoons playing in the tree branches, squirels, birds, and a deer. It is very cool! The Nature Center is open year round and also includes scheduled programs, guided hikes, and planetarium programs. Turkey run has numerous picnice areas and some shelterhouses. You can also fish along Sugar Creek. There are 2 public access areas to put a boat in the water. There are bridle trails . You can catch a guided horseback ride from the saddle barn, which is open April to October. However, you are not permitted to bring your own horse. Overall, Turkey Run State Park is a great place. There is a fee at the front gate to get in. You will enjoy this place!
