Lake Shelbyville
Illinois
We camped twice at Lake Shelbyville in Illinois. The first time was before we had kids and the second time was when I was huge and 7 months pregnant with our first child. Both trips we took our dog with us. Shelbyville in is central Illinois and is 1 hour from Champaign and Springfield Illinois. There is 11,000 acres of water. There is a federal campground, three state campgrounds, and quite a few private campgrounds. We stayed at one of the state campgrounds, which are the most popular. The state campgrounds are Eagle Creek, Wolf Creek, and Hidden Springs. The campsites are first come first serve. You can make reservations ahead of time, but it must be done in writing. This is am annoying aspect, that in this day and age isn't really necessary. The campsites here are pretty unique here, in my opion. There are many sites that are lakeside. These campsites are above the water, but there is a hill that goes right down to the water. Many people brought their boats and anchored right at the shore by their campsite. When we took or dog, she loved it. Our lab swam in the water and we could just sit and watch her from our campsite. There are also campsites that are not lakeside. All the sites are kind of small and many are built into a hill. The place to pitch your tent is a built-up area bordered by railroad ties. It is a nice campground. There is a beach for swimming, which is also nice. In the Lake Shelbyville area there are several marinas that you can go to for boat rentals. You can also fish, hunt during hunting season, go for a hike on the 6 trails, or golf at one of the numerous golf courses in the area.
Upon visiting the Lake Shelbyville website, I saw there are some new attractions since we were there. There is a new outdoor aquatic center, which contains a zero depth entry pool, frog slide, water slide, drop slide, wet and sand playground areas, concession stand, picnic area, and bath house. There is also a new movie theatre in town. Other area attractions are a uniquely built goat tower on a local farm and vineyards and winerys.
