Kettle Moraine- Southern Unit
Wisconsin
There are two Kettle Moraine State Parks in the state of Wisconsin. There is the Northern Unit and the Southern Unit. My husband and I camped in the Southern Unit with another couple that were old college friends. This was before we had kids. The Kettle Moraine Southern Unit consists of 20,000 acres. It is located 61 miles east of Madison and 37 miles southeast of Milwaukee. It is quite large and there are five family campgrounds within the park. There is the Ottawa Lake Campground, which is part of the Ottawa Lake recreation area, Pinewoods campground, Whitewater Lake East and West Campgrounds and Hickory Woods Campgrounds, which is part of the Whitewater Lake Recreation Area. There is also a Horse riders Campground. We stayed in the Ottawa Lake Campground. It was a very nice campground and we enjoyed it. There was a beach and playground within walking distance. At Kettle Moraine State Park you can hike, mountain bike, ride a horse, snowmobile, or ski on the 160+ miles of trails. There are two beaches in the Southern Unit and you can also picnic, fish, hunt, or tour three historic cabin sites. During our camping trip to Kettle Moraine, we also ventured out to Old World Wisconsin, which is a nearby attraction. This is a large, spread out place where there are a collection of farmsteads that recreate the homes and lives of settlers. It was a decent attraction to visit, but don't expect a huge thrill. The different outdoor homestead displays are spread far apart, so there was a lot of walking and you had to take a shuttle between areas.
The Kettle Moraine State Park- Southern Unit is a great Wisconsin State Park to visit for the day or an extended stay. The campground was very nice. We enjoyed it.
