The Building For Kids
Appleton, WI
If you are looking for a day trip with the kids or to just get out of the house, The Building For Kids in Appleton Wisconsin is a great idea. This is a children's museum that has been recently expanded and renovated in downtown Appleton on College Avenue. We usually take our young children there about once or twice a year, usually in the Winter when we are searching desperately for something to do. My older daughter has also gone there for a school field trip to attend special programs that the musueum offers. The Building Of Kids is now two levels of permanent and temporary exhibits. There is a lot of scheduled events planned thoughtout the year. You can log onto the Building For Kids website to view the activities and events that are scheduled from month to month. One year we went to the Building For Kids on New Years Eve Day. Every hour on the hour there was a quick parade around the building and a Happy New Year Celebration. Kids were able to wear party hats, blow horns, and through confetti. There are often familar kids characters appearing at the museum and sometimes special storytimes with favorite storybook characters. You can also arrange birthday parties at the children's museum. The Building For Kids has many permanent exhibits that are guaranteed to always be there when you visit. There is a tree house that is linked between the two floors of the museum. There is also a waterplay area where kids can put on raincoats and play in the several watertables. The Da Vinci Studio has ongoing art and science projects that kids can freely participate in. Kids can work the Boldt Crane, where they can man the controls and pick up and move around electromagnetic pieces. There is an area for small children, ages 0-3 years old. It is an area where the little ones can crawl or toddle around, play, climb, and go down a small slide. Station 99 contains a firetruck, where kids can dress up in a fireman's outfit and play in the firetruck. My kids favorite exhibit is the newer "Move It" exhibit. This is an area with lots of foam balls that the kids can haul around and place in the many suction tubes built thoughout the exhibit area. They can watch the balls travel though the clear tubes and then wait for the balls to dump over their heads. The museum has an airplane that kids can sit in and pretend to fly. Downstairs at the kid's museum there is a Kid's Town where kids can play in a mini doll hospital, gas station, convenience store, car wash, diner, and drive around little scooter cars. Upstairs there is a golf simulator, which is fun for the older kids. An exhibit loved by little boys is an area where they can play with lots of trucks in a huge pile of cut up rubber that looks like it came from tires. Lastly there is a huge human heart that kids can climb through and then slide down the slide
that comes out of it. The Building For Kids in Appleton Wisconsin is opened everyday but Mondays. Log onto the website for admission fees. Children 0-1 years old are admitted for free.
