Sands Of Kahana
On The Island Of Maui
In April of 2004 my husband's parents took the entire family to Maui for one week. My husband and I traveled with our 2 1/2 year old daughter and we left our 6 month old son at home with my parents. We also traveled with my husband's dad, step-mom, his sister, our brother in-law, our two nephews ages 6 and 4, and my husbands other brother and sister who are single and was in their mid-twenties. The Sands Of Kahana is a casual resort of towers of condos, located on Kahana Beach, midway between the Kannapali & Kapalua resorts. The Sands Of Kahana is located on the beach with views of Molokai & Lanai. You can pick from 1, 2, and 3 bedroom villas that are oceanfront, oceanview, or value view. We had a one bedroom acommodation. There was a foyer with closets leading into the codo. One closed had a stackable washer and dryer. The master bedroom had one queen sized bed. There was an attached master bathroom with vanity area, sink, toliet, and walk in shower. Off the hallway there was also a second bathroom with a toliet and tub/shower unit. There was a separate vanity and sink area outside. There was a full kitchen with stove, microwave, full size fridge, dishwasher, and a breakfast bar area with stools. There was a kitchen table that seated four people. The living room contained a section pull-out sofa, TV, and coffee table. There were two ceiling fans. One in the master bedroom and one in the living room. The condos do not have air conditioning. This is actually usually ok in Hawaii. Hawaii is warm, but the air is dry. In our five trips to Hawaii, we have never had to rely on air conditioning. Everything is open air and there are always heavenly breezes that keep you naturally cool. All the condos have a lanais, which is a balcony. Our balcony looked over the pool and the ocean. It was a nice view. The rest of our group was spread out in two other 2-bedroom condos. The two bedroom units were much bigger than our one bedroom unit. They had a larger foyer area and kitchen and also had a washer and dryer. There was a larger living room with an adjoined dining room that seated more people. The master bedroom with a king bed was open to the living room with a sliding door to separate it off when needed. There was a connected master bath also. There was a second bedroom with two single beds and an aditional bathroom. The two bedroom condo also had a balcony that was off the master bathroom. The Sands Of Kahana ammenities were decent, but not as extensive as the other luxury resorts on the island. There were a couple basic pools, tennis courts, a spa, a small restaurant with some nightly entertainment, a bar, beach activities center, outside grills, 15 championship golf courses nearby, childrens wading pool, a large beach, and a koi pond where kids can feed the fish during designated times. The positive things about the Sands Of Kahana is that the codos are large and good for large families or groups. The condos give you more room than a regular hotel room and you can cook meals and have food in your room to help save the cost of dining out. There are grocery stores near by. The Sands Of Kahana is a good value. The negative aspects of the resort is that it is not as luxurious as the bigger hotels on the island and does not offer as many amenities. The decorating of the rooms are a little outdated and a little musty smelling due to the tropical atmosphere and the fact that they are not daily like a hotel room. The condos do not have daily maid service or towel service. You do have to pick up yourself and wash your own towels in the washer and dryer. There is a housecleaning service and extra towel service, but you have to pay extra for it. The pools are not nearly as great as the luxury resorts. If you are planning on mainly beach hopping and not relying much on using the pool a lot, then it would be ok. The parking is self parking and the lots are very small with extrememly small and tight spaces. We battled the parking lot all week. The Sands Of Kahana is a timeshare, so you may be approached to attend a presentation. We were not bothered by sales people and it wasn't a big deal. Overall, the Sands Of Kahana is geared for value not luxury.
