ResortQuest Kauai Beach At Makaiwa

Kauai

Coconut Beach Resort
Now Named- ResortQuest Kauai Beach At Makaiwa

We have been to Kauai once. We stayed at the Coconut Beach Resort for 3 nights on our 3 island tour of Hawaii on our honeymoon in 1997. It is now named ResortQuest Kauai Beach At Makaiwa. The resort is situated on a 12 acre coconut grove. Out of the hotels we stayed at during our honeymoon this was our least favorite. We thought Kauai was great, although next time we go back we will choose another place. The property was ok. The buildings were a little worn down at the time, but I have seen a lot worse. When we checked in we were given a really old room that looked like it hadn't been remodeled since the 60's. I was pretty bad and not a room I wanted to be in on my honeymoon. Walking through the hallways we could see into rooms that were nicer and had more updated decorating. We contacted the front desk and was offered an upgrade for $30 more a night. Definitely worth it! The Coconut Beach Resort's website says that all the rooms were remodeled in late 2006. Hopefully, that is an improvement for the resort. The grounds of the resort were ok, but nothing like the lush landscaping you would see on Maui. Kauai is a more natural and rustic island, although I expected more out of the resort. There was only one pool at the hotel. It is basic and not anything real special or spectacular. There was a large amount of beach space, but the ocean was very rough. It is advertised on the internet that the beach is not recommended for swimming due to unpredictable currents and rough waves. That is true. There is a lounge and a Voyager Grille Restaurant. We ate in the open air and it was ok. The hotel looked nice at night with the lights around the trees and the live Hawaiian music outside by the pool. We had an all inclusive package. I do not recommend getting an all inclusive package anywhere in Hawaii. In some places, like Mexico, it is great to get all inclusive. In Hawaii it is not necessary and a waist of money. We could only pick selected items off the menu and had to pay extra if we wanted something else. We didn't use all of our prepaid meals, because we went to luaus and wanted to try other restaurants we saw outside the resorts. The Coconut Beach Resort also had a luau at it. This was our first luau we had ever been to. At the time we thought it was good. Looking back, we have been to better luaus on the island of Maui. One thing I liked about our stay here was the live Hawaiian music outside by the pool. We could open the sliding glass door to hear the music in our room. We liked Kauai and are looking forward to going back someday. We would not choose this hotel again and are lucky enough that we can now afford to stay at a better quality resort next time.
On the island of Kauai, we spent a lot of time exploring and visiting as many places as we could.
We went to many beaches and did lots of snorkeling. We loved Po'ipu Beach and many beaches such as Anahola Beach and the Napali Coast. We went to Waimea Canyon, which I loved. It is gorgeous, like the grand canyon. It looks like you are looking at a huge painting. It doesn't seem real. We saw spouting horn and many waterfalls, such as Opoekaa Falls and Wailoa Falls. We also saw sugar cane and experienced the burning of the sugar can for the first time. There is also Fern Grotto, which we didn't do. I heard wonderful things about it and wish to do it next time we go to Kauai.
Kauai is a great island. It is much different than the other Hawaiian Islands.
Overall, we did not like the Coconut Beach Hotel back when we stayed at it. It has supposedly gone under major renovations since we were at it over 10 years ago. Before making reservations, I recommend researching the property. Remember that the resort is now call ResortQuest Kauai Beach At Makaiwa.
